Friday - children led conference

The kids showed us the work they had done for the year in the children led conferences. It really rained hard that day though and by the time we left, there were flash floods. Strangely there have been quite a number of flash floods in singapore, at least 3 or 4 now and those who have ferarris in the basement are not happy.

Nate's chinese teacher made a nice portfolio of all the chinese paintings he did and nate took us thru his folder of all the things he did in the year. Can't believe he is going to be in Primary 1 next year. He will get into the chinese advanced streaming which is good news. This is what his english home room teacher wrote, "nate has a quiet but strong presence in Reception class. His strength is his ability to articulate well, he has excellent vocab for his age and gender and grasps concepts very quickly and contributes his own ideas esp. during small group lessons in english and maths. Nate generally works better in smaller group sessions rather than whole group sessions.

Nate has grasped the basic strategies involving reading and is able to decode words using picture cues, phonics and sight recognition. His math abilities are quite advanced, esp. his mental math abilities. During PYP lessons he volunteers information and makes suggestions for what we should learn.

The only area of improvement we can see for nate is that when he gets into trouble he always shifts responsibility to his friends, we have tried to teach nate that taking responsibility is a positive attribute; a sensible and intelligent child that he is, we are sure he will learn this very soon.

Nate is quite active physically and enjoys playing with the boys in the class, at the same time he can often be seen having quiet conversations with the girls in the class.

The Chinese teacher says, after this semester, Kai2 has had a big improvement, in terms of chinese he can understand the content of children stories, he likes to listen to stories and can identify the main them of the story and can use simple chinese to articulate the story, he is very interested in learning chinese characters. One a daily basis he is able to use simple expressions to say what he means.

In math he is able to do all the math activities and has a deep interest in math, in their shapes in the use of money and can grasp concepts very quickly. He likes ot help his other firends and he is diligent in solving problems. In terms of art, he has an interest to do chinese painting.

Ike is finally scoring on the upper end of the spectrum and not the bottom end! He has had 3 homeroom english teacher changes this year but the good thing is that the chinese teacher has made alot of progress and so he seems to have a greater comprehension as a result.

Ike is a cooperative and friendly child, he interacts with his friends and always willing ot share his toys, he reasons out his action and is fair in his reasoning. In English lessons, he is aware of some of the phonic sounds, he is learning to trace the alphabets. He generally uses his left hand to color and trace and he switches to his right hand to color too. He uses his right hand to eat and to use the scissors.

In matchs, ike is learning to associate one to one correspondence of relating the number to objects, he is gaining confidence to sing number related songs and expresses his views in circle time with numbers. During PE, he enjoys running around and jumping on the trampoline, he understands the rules and listens to instructions. He displays improvement in his hand eye coordination when he throws and catches the ball. Overall he displays good gross motor skills. In art he is improving his coloring and cutting skills, in painting he loves to use different colors. Ike is an enthusiastic and kind hearted child, he demonstrates good social skills while interacting with peers and teachers.

The chinese teacher writes, "Mingming has improved greatly this semester. In terms of Chinese especially in learning chinese he has displayed a much deeper interest, he has also grown more independant. He often raises his hand to answer or to perform, although sometimes he does not fully concentrate on an activity it is alot better than last term. He fully understands the teachers instructions and is also learning to communicate back in terms of his thinking and needs. He is also able to use simple sentences to introduce himself and his artwork. He can talk about his own name, his age, his family and the animals and food he likes. As for children songs and tang poems, he tries to keep up but he is not quite accurate with the words. He loves stories and he can understand most of the content and can use simple words to reply to the teacher about the story.

In terms of chinese math, we talked about the numbers 6 to 10, he is able to place each number and use it in daily life. Also in terms of the placement of the number from big to small and different shapes."

The teacher also said Ike really likes looking at the portfolio of work he put together so be prepared, bubbi, zeda etc... to go through with him his portfolio of work!
