Elephant Sanctuary

Today we woke up to big, thick, dark clouds that it was still dark at 7am. Usually by then the sun would be brightly shining. It was also colder without the sun today. Nate ate all his breakfast (I think our new methods are starting to work), then played by himself while porpor and I took Ike for a walk. When we got back, we picked Riley and Charmain up and headed out with some snacks in the car.

The journey is quite nice, lots of different views, some rolling hills, orange landscapes dotted with trees, some areas parched by burning. The sanctuary is near Hartbeesport Dam, which looks like s seaside type town. The sanctuary has only 4 elephants, the experience is quite different from the elephant tour in Chiang Mai where there are like 100 tourists, looking at 30 elephants, bathe, play football, get rides... here its a smaller group of 12, we all got to touch the elephant's trunk, tongue, ears, knees, tummy and underside of their feet. Also we got to see their stables and take them for a walk by their trunk. You could also get a kiss if you wanted, only charmain was game enough. She said it was like a vaccuum cleaner sucking sensation.

Charmain has a great way of talking to Riley, I think she gives him really clear messages, must try and absorb some of those skills. I have also finally got our parenting course in place to start in september.

We had lunch and headed home, it was a really nice excursion and I think we'll take nate out of holiday care next week as well to explore maybe the wonder caves? or the transport museum? or the science museum? or the glass village? so much to do!

Here is Ike bundled up for his walk. He's sleeping less and definitely likes his new found mobility. Forget stomach pivoting or bum swivelling, its crawl and climb.

The picture of the cactus is actually of a cactus tree, the cactuses grow really huge here, they have round trunks like trees and then branch out into cacti like poles.
